Money, Mindset & Faith: Trusting God When the Numbers Don't Add Up

Money, Mindset & Faith: Trusting God When the Numbers Don't Add Up

Jul 29, 2025

Have you ever felt like you were called to something bigger—but your bank account didn't seem to get the memo?

Yeah. Me too.

Back in 2007, when I was planning my World Record run around Australia—a journey that would take me thousands of kilometres and over 12 months on foot—I didn't have a single sponsor.

Not one.

I had poured my heart into proposal after proposal, emailing, calling, and sending out packages. I must have contacted hundreds of businesses and brands. But one by one, the responses either didn't come at all… or came with a polite no thank you.

It would have been easy to stop there. To look at the numbers and say, "Clearly this isn't possible."

But something deeper in me said otherwise.

God hadn't placed that dream in my heart to tease me.

It wasn't a fluke.

It wasn't random.

I knew I was called. And even though the money wasn't there yet, I had this quiet but unshakable belief that it would come. That provision would meet the purpose—if I just kept going.

And it did.

Support came from unexpected places. Small donors. A chance connection. Local businesses. People who believed in what I was doing, even when it didn't make sense on paper.

God made a way.

And the dream was achieved.

Let's Talk About Money (And the Lies We Believe)

If you're building an online business right now—or even just thinking about it—you might be facing some of the same resistance

I did:

  • What if I'm not good with money?
  • What if I never earn enough to replace my job?
  • What if this is selfish?
  • What if I'm doing it wrong?

But here's the truth: money is not the enemy.

It's a tool. A resource.

And in the right hands and with the right heart, it becomes a blessing—not just for you, but for others too.

When God calls you to build something, He doesn't call you to poverty.

He calls you to stewardship.

And sometimes? That starts with believing you're allowed to succeed.

From Scarcity to Stewardship

I grew up with the mindset that money was hard to come by, that it was better to play it safe, and that if you were struggling, that probably meant you were humble.

And I understand why.

As the child of immigrant parents who came to Australia with nothing but two suitcases and a pocket full of dreams, I saw firsthand what it meant to build a life from scratch.

Every dollar was earned through hard work. Every opportunity felt like something that could be taken away.

There was a sense that money wasn't bad, but it was always uncertain—so you held on tight. You didn't ask for too much. You didn't take risks.

And while that upbringing taught me resilience and gratitude, it also planted seeds of scarcity.

But here's what I've learned as I've grown—in life, in faith, and in business:

Faith isn't about struggling for the sake of struggling.

Faith is about trusting God's abundance, even when you don't see it yet.

It's about taking the next step—launching the blog, writing the post, building the funnel—not because you know where every dollar will come from, but because you believe that God provides for what He calls you to.

Building with Faith: If You Build It, They Will Come

There's a quote from the movie Field of Dreams that's always stuck with me:

"If you build it, they will come."

Sometimes, that's how faith works.

Not blind, not reckless—but bold.

It means creating your offer before your audience is big.

It means writing your blog posts when no one's reading.

It means trusting that if God gave you the message, He will send the people who need to hear it.

I remind myself of this all the time—especially now, as I'm building Faith + Funnels.

This blog, this business, this ministry—it's not just about income.

It's about impact.

And the income? It will follow.

Three Faith-Filled Shifts to Make with Money

If you're struggling to trust God financially while building your business, try these three shifts:

1. Provision follows obedience.

Instead of waiting for the money before taking action, trust that God's provision will flow after your 'yes'.

Not before.

"And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus." – Philippians 4:19

2. Budget with faith, not fear.

Start tracking your business expenses and income, even if it's $0 right now. This isn't just bookkeeping—it's declaring, "I believe there will be something to steward."

3. Speak abundance.

Watch your words. Speak life over your finances.

Instead of "I'm broke," say "I'm building."

Instead of "I can't afford it," say "I'm being strategic with how I invest."

You are not broke.

You are not behind.

You are becoming.

What to Do When It Feels Like Nothing Is Working

Let me say this: You're not behind.

And no, you didn't miss your chance.

If you're reading this with tears in your eyes and bills on the table, wondering if this dream of making money online is even Christian—I want to remind you:

Your work matters.

Your words matter.

Your calling matters.

And the Kingdom needs women like you in it—bold, creative, purpose-filled women who build businesses with integrity and faith.

If you feel called to connect with your audience, build a community, or even launch a podcast or create an offer—do it.

Let your faith move you forward.

Even if no one sees it yet.

Even if the money isn't there yet.

Even if your spreadsheet says "this makes no sense."

Because God's economy is different.

He is not limited by numbers, followers, algorithms, or balance sheets.

And His timing?

It's perfect.

If this post spoke to your heart, share it with a friend who's building something in faith. You never know who needs the reminder that God still provides.

Stay Blessed,

Deborah 💛

Mini Devotional

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." – Hebrews 11:1

Reflection:

Faith doesn't wait until the numbers add up. It acts, even when the evidence isn't there yet. If God has placed something on your heart to build, trust that He has already begun making a way—even if you can't see it. Provision often follows obedience, and miracles are most often found on the other side of a faithful yes.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for being the God of provision and promise.

Help me trust You when the numbers don't add up and fear whispers doubt.

Remind me that You are not limited by my current circumstances.

Give me the faith to build what You've placed on my heart, the wisdom to steward it well, and the peace to know that You are with me every step of the way.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
